Journalism Today

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:39 am

Every month for well over twenty-five years I have received a copy of the “Quill”, a magazine by and for the members of the Society of Professional Journalists. The April issue had only in-house SPJ advertisements; none by any vendors. And it was a very slim edition, some 35 pages devoted to things like the SPJ president’s message, an analysis of the coverage of the presidential campaign that exonerated journalists of any bias, and “Examples of Ethical Excellence.”

Back in December I penned a commentary titled, “Cheerful Thoughts at the Funeral” that took issue with comments by Dave Aeikens, the SPJ president and God knows I am not picking on him, but the opening line in his April message was, “If anything will keep the demand for news strong, it will be journalist’s ability to produce reliable, timely and accurate information while using proven ethical standards.”

There is a demand for news, but it is being met on the Internet and even more there is a demand for an interpretation of what passes for news or doesn’t get published as news in the mainstream media, in this case newspapers.

When nearly half of those polled say that global warming is the very last topic on their mind these days newspapers are still full of references to a climate event that is just not happening. The Earth has been cooling since 1998. The Sun for nearly two years is virtually without any sunspots—magnetic storms—and the real news is that the Earth is truly threatened by two outcomes of this, both of which could result in the deaths of millions through starvation as increasing cold weather deters crop growth.

Aeikens knows that newspaper circulation is shrinking and web site audiences are growing and he says so. The Society’s answer, however, is a series of town hall meetings to ask people why they no longer trust the local fish-wrap. This is just a complete waste of time. This is a willing blindness to the bias and poor reporting that have come to typify the mainstream press.

Let me take a shot at what the problem is. Could it have something to do with the appalling school girl crush that the mainstream media had on a certain Barack Hussein Obama and has now extended to his wife? Could the public resent having been convinced to vote for someone who is tripling the nation’s deficit, planning new taxes, and is so tied to a teleprompter that it’s already a joke?

Could the public be sick of endless articles on how to be “Green” or why they are to blame for not adding thousands of dollars of solar panels to the roofs of their homes? Or choose to drive traditional automobiles rather than hybrids? Or articles declaring that the primary sources of energy in America, coal, oil and natural gas, are “dirty” and the cause of a “global warming” that is not happening?Could the public be angered to have been blindsided by a financial crisis that experts had been warning about for years, but whom the press largely ignored?

The thickest section of the daily I receive is the sports section and I never read the sports section. What is left is mostly wire service stories by the horridly biased Associated Press and some comparably silly stuff by Reuters. Everything else is feature news fluff.

For Obama, Opening Day overseas

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:28 am

As much as President Barack Obama would like to be at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field on April 6, it seems unlikely that the First Fan will be there for the home season opener against the Kansas City Royals.

On that day, Obama is now expected to be in Istanbul, Turkey, making the visit to an overwhelmingly Muslim country that he has promised during the early days of his administration.

The stop in Turkey will follow a trip the president and First Lady Michelle Obama are making to Europe from March 31 to April 5 that will include a NATO summit and meetings with European Union leaders.

The Sox had invited their highest-profile fan to use his left-handed toss to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on the South Side, something Obama did during the 2005 playoffs.

Brooks Boyer, the Sox’s chief marketing officer, said the ballclub has not heard anything official from the White House about the team’s offer.

“We’d love to have him there, but we’ve known all along that if duty calls, duty calls,” Boyer said. “Hopefully, at some point, he’ll make it out to a game.”

While he may not be there in person this year, Obama’s favorite Chicago sports teams are never far from his mind. Just last week, he mentioned two of them while trying to make a point about federal spending to reporters gathered at the White House from 15 regional newspapers.

“I’d like to make sure that the Chicago Bulls win the championship every year and the White Sox win the series,” he said. “But you know, show me how you’re going to do it.”

iPhone 3.0 software holds promise for music apps

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:08 am

After all the speculation, Apple’s iPhone 3.0 software was unveiled tonight at an event in California, and most of the rumours were proved right. Support for push notifications, stereo Bluetooth and access to the iPod music library from within apps were three of the main new features from a music point of view. But Apple also revealed that it’s now sold 30 million iPhones and iPod touches – 17 million and 13 million respectively. 800,000 developers have downloaded the iPhone SDK, and 50,000 have joined Apple’s official iPhone developer program. And 800 million apps have been downloaded since the App Store launched last July. But back to those features, and how they relate to music. Apps still aren’t allowed to run in the background when someone’s using their iPhone, due to battery life concerns. However, they can use push notification to ping users with alerts, which is most likely to be of use to social networks and games firms. Giving apps access to the iPhone music library may be significant though. Not just for music games that use people’s own tunes - The Sims 3 has this feature – but also (possibly) for scrobbling type applications that track what someone’s listening to, or recommendation-based streaming music apps. Stereo Bluetooth will be a boon for music fans, of course. New forms of payment are also supported, including subscription-based billing and micro-transactions for virtual items. The latter will be most useful for games, but the former could enable a bunch of new music business models on the App Store.

Bluetooth in Touch 2G

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:50 pm

The iPod Touch 2G has Bluetooth capability. It’s going to be unlocked with iPhone OS 3.0, which was announced today. Touch users have to pay $10 for the upgrade, which firesign3000 tells me is the same thing that happened with the 1.0 to 2.0 upgrade – iPhone users get it free, but once a Touch is purchased there’s no monthly kickbacks to Apple, so they get it out of us this way. (I bought my Touch after 2.0 was released.)

Over on Engadget, people are griping about having to pay for something that’s supposed to be part of what we already bought. (I guess these people missed the fact that the App Store will also allow developers to sell new levels for games, etc.) I don’t care though, I was already planning to pay for the update, but now I’m really planning to, and I’m really excited. I have Bluetooth capability with my hearing aids, and in order to use them with my iPod Touch I had bought a Jabra A120 transmitter. Now I won’t need it anymore! It will be awesome to hook my iPod straight into my hearing aids. I am really looking forward to this update!

In fact, if it didn’t require switching to AT&T, I’d go whole-hog and get an iPhone. That’s more hassle than it’s worth, though, so I’m still going to use my Blackberry Curve on T-Mobile. My iPod Touch will just be even more awesomenow.

President Obama will visit SCE electric vehicle center

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:20 am

During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama swapped his Hemi for a hybrid and called for a million plug-in hybrids by 2015. This Thursday, the President is scheduled to visit the Southern California Edison Electric Vehicle Technical Center in Pomona to see the progress that SCE and Ford are making on their plug-in Escape hybrids and other clean vehicles.

SCE’s Electric Vehicle Technical Center does more than plug-in hybrid work, since is also tests pure EVs, hybrids and fuel cell propulsion systems as well as different battery packs and chargers. Overall, the SCE electric drive fleet has “logged more than 16 million tailpipe-emission-free miles.” Back in 2007, Ford handed over the keys to the first PHEV Escape prototype to SCE. In 2008, we got a quick test drive of the PHEV Escape during the New York Auto Show.

China ready for new stimulus measures ‘if needed’

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:22 pm

China has made plans to inject more money into its economy if needed, Premier Wen Jiabao said, as he admitted the global crisis was making this year’s growth target hard to achieve.
His remark was the clearest indication yet that China could introduce new policies on top of an unprecedented four-trillion-yuan (580-billion-dollar) stimulus package unveiled in November.
“We already have plans ready to tackle even more difficult times,” Wen told a news conference at the end of the annual full session of parliament.
“To do that, we have reserved adequate ammunition, which means that at any time we can introduce new stimulus policies.”
Markets had expressed disappointment that this year’s nine-day parliamentary session had so far not yielded any firm pledges of additional spending measures for the world’s third-biggest economy.
While expressing confidence in the effectiveness of the initial stimulus package, Wen said there were no guarantees of achieving China’s economic growth target for 2009 of about eight percent.
