Two weeks after establishing a bear market low, the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Friday opened 400 points lower, carrying over the panicked selling from the Asian and European markets, and capping off another roller coaster week for stocks.
The Dow did not recover after the foreign markets closed, with U.S. stocks ending the week sharply lower as fears of a global recession socked equities around the world.
The case for a near-term market bottom is linked to an eventual limit on hedge fund selling, tax loss selling by mutual funds before Oct. 31 and a potential post-election rally.”This thing is so stressed to the downside,” Mr. Jones said. “We are due for a healthy technical rebound, and I could see the Dow at 11,000 or 11,500 by yearend.”
Getting to that point, which would mean a gain of more than 26% over the next two months, could mean retesting how much the market is willing to dip in a single day, Mr. Jones said.
“People have drawn some silly lines in the sand, and we might have to close below the Oct. 10 low to finally get all the nervous money out,” he said.
